Cultural Arts Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities6901 Wadsworth Boulevard Arvada, CO 80002 303-431-3939 The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities offers year-round theater, concerts and dance, art galleries with changing exhibitions, a historical museum, and classes in ceramics, dance, writing, acting, and visual arts. The Center's theater company produces six shows each year, including musicals, dramas, and comedies. The Arvada Center Galleries feature 15 exhibitions yearly. In addition, the children's theater program serves more than 60,000 school children annually. Foothills Art Center 809 15th Street Golden, CO 80401 303-279-3922 The Foothills Arts Center houses a fine arts center with changing exhibitions, lectures, art classes, volunteer opportunities, and a gift shop. The Center is located in an 1872 Victorian Gothic Church and parsonage listed on the National Register of Historical Places. The Center was voted "Best Art Gallery in Colorado" by the Denver Post in 1998 and 1999. Jefferson Symphony Orchestra The 90-member orchestra, established in 1953, presents classical and contemporary music. The symphony performs five classical concerts in the winter season at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden and five open-air summer concerts in various Jefferson County parks. Allison Parkway Lakewood, CO 80226 303-387-7876 This 38,000 square-foot facility located at the Lakewood City Commons government center includes a 300-seat theater, community room, gallery/exhibit space, gift shop, classrooms, and lobby space. The Cultural Center is designed for art and cultural programming and general community use, and offers special engagements, regionally recognized artist performances and exhibitions, community presentations, performances, or exhibits featuring work by local artists, schools, and emerging art organizations. Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre 12700 W. Alameda Avenue Morrison, CO 80465 303-295-4445 Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre is a natural, geologically formed, open-air amphitheatre located in the Rocky Mountain foothills of Jefferson County, and is the premier outdoor concert venue in Denver. The majestic setting of the amphitheatre, along with the view of downtown Denver from the top of the theater is breathtaking. The 600-plus acre park and 9,000-seat amphitheatre was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. Red Rocks celebrated its 60th anniversary in the summer of 2001 with special landmark events and performers.The theater provides perfect acoustics and was once listed as one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Red Rocks park is open to visitors and hikers year-round. Historic Sites Boettcher Mansion 900 Colorow Road Golden, CO 80401 303-526-0855 Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Mansion maintains historic authenticity of the arts & crafts architecture period with lighting, wallpaper, furniture, hardware, wall stenciling, and draperies appropriate to its 1917 construction date. Built by Charles Boettcher as a summer home and hunting lodge, the Mansion is located on the top of Lookout Mountain, and was donated to Jefferson County by Boettcher's granddaughter, Charline Breeden, in 1970. The Mansion opened to the public in 1975. Weddings and other special events are regularly hosted at the Mansion. Cabrini Shrine I-70 and Morrison Exit Mother Cabrini, the first American saint, spent years ministering to Colorado's poor. Visitors can climb 377 steps to the top where her Sacred Heart statue stands. Along the way are the Stations of the Cross and Mysteries of the Rosary. Clear Creek History Park 1020 11th Street Golden, CO 80401 303-278-3557 This unique 3-acre experiential education site consists of original 1870s homestead cabins, an 1876 one-room school house, a replica of a blacksmith shop, a root cellar, and heirloom gardens. The park is devoted to "hands-on history," with demonstrators not only performing pioneering skills and activities, but actively encouraging visitors to try their hand at various demonstrations as they change from day to day.  Lakewood Heritage Center797 S. Wadsworth Blvd. Lakewood, CO 80215 303-987-7850 A 20th-century museum and historical and social center, the Lakewood Heritage Center is located on 15 acres in Belmar Park. The property was once the estate of Mary Bonfils Stanton and a number of original structures, now considered historic, are part of the museum site. Exhibits, educational events, and programs support the theme of Lakewood's evolution in the 20th century. Museums Astor House Museum 822 12th Street Golden, CO 80401 303-278-3557 Built in 1867, the Astor House was conveniently located across the alley from the meeting place of the Colorado Territorial Legislature in Golden. This restored late Victorian western hotel is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Arvada Flour Mills 5590 Old Wadsworth Boulevard Arvada, CO 80002 303-421-4391 This restored historic flour mill features equipment from the late 1800s. Tours by appointment only. Buffalo Bill Memorial Museum and Grave 987-1/2 Lookout Mountain Road Golden, CO 80401 303-526-0747 The museum features a retrospective depicting the life of William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody. Exhibits include posters from his Wild West shows, a Native American gallery, paintings and photographs, clothing, and memorabilia from his life. Cody, who died in 1917, selected his own burial site on Lookout Mountain because of its spectacular view. Colorado Railroad Museum 17155 W. 44th Avenue Golden, CO 80401 303-279-4591 800-365-6263 Outdoor exhibits showcase more than 50 narrow and standard gauge locomotives and railcars, and indoor collections include 50,000 rare photographs, papers, and artifacts relating to Colorado's rail history. Hiwan Homestead Museum 4208 South Timbervale Drive Evergreen, CO 80439 303-674-6262 The historic Hiwan Homestead Museum is a 17-room log home and an outstanding example of the style of architecture known as Rocky Mountain Rustic. Hiwan began as a simple, one-room structure that was converted to a summer home for Civil War widow Mary Neosho Williams and her daughter, Josepha. Among the Museum's special collections include objects of Native American art, collections of dolls, nineteenth and twentieth century decorative arts, and nearly 5000 photographic images relating to early Evergreen and the surrounding areas in Jefferson County. Morrison Natural History Museum 501 Colorado Highway 8 Morrison, CO 80465 303-697-1873 Opened in 1990, this museum tells the story of Morrison's dinosaur discoveries on nearby Dinosaur Ridge, and the plants and animals that share the area today. Here you can see–and touch–real dinosaur bones, and even help chip rock away from the Return of the Native exhibit. Attractions Butterfly Pavilion and Insect Center 6252 W. 104th Avenue Westminster, CO 80020 303-469-5441 This interactive center opened in July of 1995 to foster an appreciation of butterflies and other invertebrates and to educate the public about the need for conservation of threatened habitats. Butterfly Pavillion features a tropical rain forest harboring more than 1,200 free-flying butterflies. A chrysalis-viewing area reveals the process of metamorphosis. The Insect Center displays terrariums holding a variety of insects from around the world. Bandimere Speedway 3051 S. Rooney Road Morrison, CO 80465 303-697-6001 Bandimere Speedway is the home of the NHRA/Winston Mopar Mile-High Nationals. The speedway is a large, multi-use outdoor facility featuring NHRA Championship Drag Racing, family entertainment, facility rental, corporate ticket sales, hospitality services, and party facilities. Coors Brewing Company 13th and Ford Streets Golden, CO 80401 303-277-2337 Adolph Coors founded this famous brewery in Golden in 1873, three years before Colorado became a state. Using Rocky Mountain spring water in its brewing process has helped develop the Coors mystique. Today, Coors is America's third largest brewery. Coors offers free tours and beer samples (for those over 21 years of age) and soft drinks following the tours. Over 300,000 people tour the brewery annually. Dinosaur Ridge 16831 W. Alameda Parkway Golden, CO 80401 303-697-DINO (3466) Dinosaur Ridge is a geological and paleontological outdoor museum. Bones from some of the largest dinosaurs were discovered here, and many are still embedded in the sandstone. More than 300 dinosaur tracks are preserved at the site. A visitor center is located on-site. Jefferson County Fairgrounds 15200 W. 6th Avenue Golden, CO 80401 303-271-6600 A 100+ acre facility located near Golden, the fairgrounds are located at the foot of the majestic Rocky Mountains. The site hosts many year-round activities, including national and local rodeos and the Westernaires, a group of young equestrians famous for precision drilling. The fairgrounds also provide a wide range of other facilities to accommodate trade shows, banquets, meetings, weddings, picnics, and many other events. National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC) Colorado School of Mines Campus 1711 Illinois Street Golden, CO 80401 303-273-8500 The National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC), a part of the Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey, is located on the Colorado School of Mines campus in Golden. The NEIC determines the location and size of all destructive earthquakes that occur worldwide, disseminating this information to national and international agencies, scientists, and the general public. The NEIC is the national data center and archive for earthquake information, and has an active research program to improve its ability to locate and understand earthquakes. National Renewable Energy Laboratory 1617 Cole Boulevard Golden, CO 80401 303-384-6565 As the nation's leading center for renewable energy research, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is developing new energy technologies to benefit both the environment and the economy. NREL's 300-acre campus is located at the foot of South Table Mountain in Golden. Displays and interactive exhibits explain how renewable energy from the sun, wind, plants, rivers, and oceans can be converted to electricity for homes and fuel for cars. NREL celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2002. Tours are available. Tiny Town and Railroad 6249 S. Turkey Creek Road Morrison, CO 80465 303-697-6829 The town, created at the site of the 1915 Denver-Leadville stagecoach stop, features more than 100 child-size buildings in residential, rural, and mountain settings. The town's turn-of-the-century downtown features a fire station, a toy store, an ice cream shop, a movie theater, a gas station, a grade school, and a library. A coal-fired steam engine pulls visitors in open cars around the village. A picnic area and playground are available. |
